peopleCare’s approach to employee wellness a model for LTC
Healthcare Excellence Canada recently recognized peopleCare Communities’ efforts to build a meaningful, sustained workplace wellness culture in collaboration with mental health and wellness experts as a promising practice.
Under the umbrella of “Promising Practices to Enable a Healthy Workforce to Provide Person-Centred Care in Long-Term Care,” peopleCare’s Recovering Strong strategy stood out as an innovative employee-informed initiative that addressed the significant challenges team members faced as a result of the pandemic.
A core pillar of peopleCare’s visionary Limitless strategy is transforming the employee experience by fostering vitality, purpose, and fulfillment. This includes targeted wellness programs and resources that support the physical, mental, and emotional wellbeing of all employees.
Key highlights include:
- Targeted action plans based on employee feedback from repeated engagement and wellness surveys.
- Increased availability of free, confidential external counseling services.
- Empowering wellness champions in every home to help one another feel stronger, healthier, and more resilient.
Throughout 2022 and 2023, peopleCare also partnered with the Canadian Mental Health Association – Ontario to offer mental health supports and learning sessions through their Your Health Space (YHS) program. Homes selected topics such as Managing Stress in the Workplace, Burnout and Recovery, and Embracing Mental Health – Flourishing in the Workplace. peopleCare was one of the first senior living organizations to implement the YHS program and did so in a very intentional way, working with CMHA to tailor supports and engage employees online and in person, through conversations, education, focus groups and surveys.
These initiatives and more are highlighted in HEC’s Promising Practices for Reimagining LTC: Building a Meaningful, Sustained Workplace Wellness Culture – Recovering Strong Employee Wellness Strategy.
