peopleCare welcomes inaugural Chief Medical Officer

October 7, 2024

peopleCare is delighted to announce Dr. Tracy Hughes as our organization’s inaugural Chief Medical Officer (CMO). With a background in comprehensive family medicine and inpatient hospital care, Dr. Hughes has also devoted over a decade of her career to leading within the long-term care (LTC) sector. Most recently, she has demonstrated outstanding leadership while achieving exceptional outcomes in resident care as Medical Director at three peopleCare homes.

Dr. Hughes’ innovative approach and unwavering commitment to enhancing care quality in LTC make her an outstanding choice for this pivotal role. During her tenure as a physician leader in our organization, she has exemplified extraordinary leadership and dedication. She is committed to patient care and safety and is always going over and above her role to support quality across our organization – for instance, as a member of peopleCare’s Ethics Committee and being a part of our selection committee for our frontline staff annual values awards.

One of Dr. Hughes’s most notable achievements as one of peopleCare’s Medical Directors is driving positive outcomes in reducing antipsychotic medication use without diagnosis and unnecessary emergency department (ED) transfers. The homes under her leadership have consistently performed well below the provincial average, setting new benchmarks of excellence and showcasing her innovative approach to problem-solving and commitment to advancing care outcomes.

In addition to her clinical achievements, Dr. Hughes is known for her exemplary mentorship and support of the attending physicians she leads. She fosters a collaborative and supportive environment, encouraging continual learning and growth—an approach that resonates with the positive feedback we frequently receive from residents and families about her care.

Looking ahead, Dr. Hughes will continue to lead with a strong focus on collaboration, driving innovation, sharing best practices, and streamlining processes to deliver more efficient and impactful care. She will also partner closely with all our Medical Directors to elevate care standards, improve quality and foster a culture of continuous improvement across our homes.

Dr. Hughes is a role model for her colleagues both within peopleCare and across the LTC sector. Please join us in congratulating Dr. Hughes as she embarks on this exciting new chapter of her leadership journey, helping peopleCare change the world of senior living and improve the lives of those we serve.
