peopleCare and Town of Ingersoll to enhance campus model on MURC site
Answering community calls and aligning with provincial goals for expanded seniors housing and care services, Ingersoll has secured peopleCare Communities as its newest partner, further enhancing the campus model the Town is developing on acquired land to meet the needs of the community and region. This innovative collaboration is a positive step forward in addressing the growing need for additional long-term care (LTC) capacity in our region while maximizing the potential of this property through a strategic, collaborative development process.
“This is an excellent example of what is possible when we are willing to collaborate and partner with others to achieve the goals of our community! I want to thank people care for their interest in our community and for wanting to part of this innovative campus model that will help achieve the goals of our town, the region and the province,” says Ingersoll Mayor Brian Petrie. “Together with peopleCare and our other partners we will create something amazing!”
peopleCare develops senior living communities of care that can include senior’s apartments, retirement, assisted living and LTC, depending on the needs of each community. Locating a LTC home on the same site as the Town’s new multi-use recreation centre (MURC) in a campus model offers numerous benefits to both projects including:
- Shared infrastructure reducing overall development costs
- Intergenerational programming opportunities between MURC users and care home residents
- Enhanced quality of life for seniors through access to recreation amenities
- Increased visitors to the area, supporting local businesses
- Greater efficiencies in municipal service delivery
- Local, regional and provincial priorities achieved
Megan Allen-Lamb is President of peopleCare Communities, and she extended a big warm thank you to the Town of Ingersoll Staff and Council for their forward-thinking approach to community building. “We envision creating vibrant, intergenerational communities that transform experiences for seniors, and co-locating a beautiful new long-term care home with the Town’s recreation centre development, housing and a new school is a natural fit,” says Allen-Lamb. “It will help residents stay connected, enjoying the vibrancy of a familiar neighbourhood with friendly faces and school children nearby, access to amenities and more ways to engage and have fun. It’s a great example of how we’re changing the world of senior living and helping seniors live with vitality, connection, and purpose.”
peopleCare has submitted an application to the Ministry of Long-Term Care, requesting the necessary bed licenses to enable the proposed LTC home. With 45,000 people waiting for LTC in Ontario – and limited supply in Ingersoll and the surrounding areas – more LTC beds are urgently needed to ensure residents can access appropriate care, services and housing as they age. Adding LTC beds in Ingersoll would ease waitlist pressures on LTC homes in the area, and free-up beds in the local hospital for those who need acute care.
As a significant investment in the community, peopleCare’s development would also create hundreds of jobs and boost the local economy. Having cared for seniors in Tavistock for close to 60 years, and with a 160-bed LTC home in construction in Tillsonburg, peopleCare has long-standing partnerships in Oxford County. They have worked closely with senior leadership at Alexandra/Tillsonburg Memorial Hospitals, Woodstock General Hospital, Oxford & Area Ontario Health Team, and other community support service agencies to enhance supports for residents to live and age well across the County.
